“I’m down with swine flu …” Amit Shah tweeted. This has been the breaking news since last night when his tweet became viral. I was at my relatives’ place and being ardent BJP supporter they are, they were keeping a constant tab on this development. He has been admitted to one of the best hospitals in Delhi.
I do not follow politics. But it doesn’t require the close following of politics to know the importance of Amit Shah to BJP. He was the one who orchestrated BJP’s win in the Indian General Election of two thousand and sixteen. Not only that, it was his strategic approach that helped BJP to make inroads in UP – the Cleopatra of Indian States whom BJP had found utterly difficult to seduce.
With such an impressive CV, Amit Shah’s single sneeze is bound to increase the heartbeat of the entire Party. So you can imagine the scare in their hearts on hearing the news of his illness from Swine Flu. And that too when the Indian General Election of two thousand and twenty are a couple of months away!
So the huge outpour seen on the TV in support of Amit Shah was expected. So was expected some negative news about him from the anti-BJP media houses. (To ensure that this news of illness does not translate into sympathy votes for BJP.)
But what I didn’t expect, at all, was the new low by many journalists from NDTV, Quint and The Wire, who unabashedly wished ill for Amit Shah on social media. They sent out gleeful tweets where they not only expressed their happiness on him catching the flu but actively expressed their wishes that he dies of this disease!
“People die of Swine Flu, right?” Tweeted one of the journalists from Quint. Many another journalist from NDTV tweeted their glee and happiness about the incident.
Indian news channels’ sensibilities have hit an abysmal low.
We know that news has come far from its original motto of objective reporting. We have learned to live with that. But this kind of manhunt where journalists target someone based on their own opinions and prejudices is mind-numbing. Using their wide reach on social media, these pseudo-intellectual journalists attack and defame leaders and in the process, brainwash viewers who still believe in the sanctity of the profession of Journalism.
But the sad part is that these news channels and their pseudo-intellectual reporters are thriving. And they are thriving for one simple reason – we watch them. There is an audience for them. And they are making money out of that. I wish that changes one day when news channels are more than sensationalization.
